All new first-year students will meet with two dedicated teams: The Office of Transitional Guides is the first point of contact for advising and institutional onboarding. Students must meet with their Transitional Guide to complete required systems trainings, access critical resources, and ensure that their UMX Registration Module (via Canvas) and Pre-Registration Forms are completed correctly. Transitional Guides ensure new students have math placement scores or have taken the ALEKS math placement test.
College of Engineering Cane Navigators: Once your foundational onboarding requirements are met with the Transitional Guide, the new first-year students’ academic file is handed off to the College of Engineering Advising staff (Cane Navigators), who oversee long-term academic advising, course registration adjustments, and degree progression.

All undergraduate engineering students are advised by the Center for Academic Navigation and Success, located in the College of Engineering Undergraduate Advising Office. Please be advised that new first-year and new transfer students must meet with their College of Engineering advisors to register for classes. The College of Engineering Cane Navigators are here to serve as a resource and help. All students should read the below sections detailing the process of advising and registration from the College of Engineering.
All new first-year incoming students should review the information and links in the section titled “Additional Advising Information” below, and they will be discussed during your first advising meeting with the Transitional Guides.
The College of Engineering advising office makes sure all new first-year students are registered in the appropriate classes based on math placement, verified credits, and engineering major.
During this period, the office reviews all transfer credits that were evaluated by the respective departments via the MATES transfer evaluation system to determine the equivalent class at the University of Miami.
You and every incoming student in the College of Engineering are in the Integrated Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry/Communication Track (IMPACT) program. Students in this program take all or most of the classes together. This helps first-year students get to know each other much more quickly than would happen otherwise. This facilitates students seeking each other’s help in learning, as well as coping with the transition from high school to university. The students form a learning community, which enhances their university experience and provides a support system during their first year. The class groups are decided based on the mathematics class into which the student has been placed. The mathematics class is decided based on the student’s ALEKS Math Placement Assessment scores.
Newly admitted students’ math placement will be determined based on the SAT or ACT scores that have been submitted. Visit here for the Placement Guide and proctored testing dates and times. International test-optional students without other placement criteria, such as AP, IB or Cambridge, will be required to complete the ALEKS Math Placement. Knowing that the transition to a U.S. academic setting can be challenging, this will ensure that your enrollment is tailored to your abilities and will maximize your chances of academic success. Visit here for the Placement Guide and proctored testing dates and times.Mathematics

If you took a course for college credit, you must submit official transcripts to the University of Miami Office of Admission from the issuing college or university. A listing on the high school transcript is not sufficient to award college credit. A minimum grade of “C” is required for consideration of credit in all dual enrollment and transfer courses. Please note: All grades earned in these courses are part of your permanent record. MATES Miami Academic Transfer Evaluation System (Prospective Students) If you have taken dual enrollment courses or have transfer courses from another university and wish to have your course evaluated, first-year and transfer students are expected to send their transcript from the respective university where the course was completed and complete the MATES electronic form. Please learn about the policy about transfer credits and the evaluation process. Official transcripts for credits earned from any college/university should be sent to:AP/IB/CLEP Transfer credits
All official test score reports should be sent to:

Students at the College of Engineering must fulfill the Areas of Knowledge requirement by completing three cognates, one from each of the three areas of the university curriculum: arts and humanities; people and society; and science, technology, engineering and mathematics. For students in the College of Engineering, their engineering major will count as a cognate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These students must only complete a cognate in people and society and arts and humanities. All approved cognates are visible in the cognate search engine
For a complete list of courses you will take in your major by semester, please visit the College of Engineering Bulletin and click on the appropriate major.
First-Year Writing I (WRS 105) is a required course for all engineering students.
Should you receive an exemption from (not credit in) WRS 105 through appropriate SAT/ACT scores, you will still need to take 6 credits in writing in the College of Engineering.
Most engineering students must take at least one chemistry course with a lab and at least three university physics courses with two laboratories. During your first year, you will take either physics or chemistry, depending on your math placement. You must be placed in Calculus I or higher to enroll in your first university physics course.
