PhD Financial Assistantship

We offer very competitive funding to outstanding applicants who are admitted to a PhD program. In fall 2020, PhD assistantships (teaching and/or research assistantship) will include:

  1. Full tuition
  2. 80% of health insurance coverage
  3. A stipend of $31,000 over 12 months
  4. Guaranteed support for four years for students entering with a bachelor’s degree, provided that there is satisfactory progress toward the degree
  5. Guaranteed support for three years for students entering with a master’s degree, provided that there is satisfactory progress toward the degree

PhD Admission Requirements

Applicants need a strong academic record, as evidenced by:

  1. Outstanding grades in MS engineering coursework (cumulative GPA > 3.5)
  2. High GRE general test scores (verbal plus quantitative > 302)
  3. Acceptable scores on TOEFL or ILETS exams (international students only)
  4. Stellar letters of recommendation
  5. Research experiences and publications

An MS degree in engineering is usually required for admission into one of our PhD programs, but outstanding students with a BS degree in engineering and/or other BS or MS degree in related fields may be also considered.

Application Deadlines

The application for admission must be completed before the submission deadlines (international applicants are highly encouraged to submit their completed applications as early as possible in order to ensure ample time for the student visa process if accepted for admission):

  • Fall 2020 (August) – June 1, 2020 for all PhD programs with exceptions of Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics and Mechanical Engineering as those application processes have been completed

    (Please note: applications given highest funding consideration are those who completed the application process by the priority deadline of December 1)

  • Spring 2021 (January) – December 1, 2020

Instructions On How To Apply

  1. Sign Up for an account on the EngineeringCAS website. Please note: Your application is not complete and we cannot begin your application review until we receive all required documentation. Your non-refundable application fee must be paid at the time you submit the application online.
  2. Send Official Transcripts. Request one official transcript from each post-secondary institution (college or university) that you have attended regardless if it was for a certificate, class, intensive program or degree. You must request the registrar of each institution you have attended to mail the official documentation directly to the EngineeringCAS mailing address (International Students must also review additional instructions).
  3. Submit three (3) letters of recommendation electronically as outlined on the application for admission.
  4. Send Official GRE Scores. All applicants must submit official (within five years of exam date) Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, which include the aptitude portion, as well as the most relevant advanced test in the major field if required by the department. Be sure to use the GRE code of 5815, so that your official scores are sent directly to us. Scores will only be considered official if sent directly to us from the testing agency. Institutional exam results are not valid for admission purposes.
  5. Complete the Essay. Students should submit a 500-word statement of academic and professional goals.
