International applicants to MS and PhD programs are required to submit the following additional information.

English Proficiency

Applicants whose native language is not English must submit official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The scores are valid for two years from the time you took the exam.

The following are our minimum english proficiency scores:

Please note: Scores will only be considered official if sent directly to us from the testing agency. Institutional exam results are not valid for admission purposes.

*Must have passing subset scores in both Reading and Writing for concurrent enrollment. IEP stands for Intensive English Program. Please note that these requirements are subject to change.

Applicants holding an undergraduate or graduate degree from an academic institution within the United States or one of the following English-speaking countries are not required to take the TOEFL/IELTS examination:

International Student Visa

If you plan on attending after being admitted, send us the documentation necessary for us to process your student visa:

  • A copy of the biographical page of your valid passport which includes the display of your picture, name and date of birth.
  • An official bank* or government sponsorship letter (issued within six months of starting date at UM), addressed to the University of Miami, guaranteeing the availability of sufficient funds to cover tuition** and fees, books, room and board, medical insurance, and personal expenses.

*If the bank account belongs to a relative or other sponsor, a letter of sponsorship addressed to the University of Miami is also required and must contain the following information:

  • amount of the financial support promised for the first year of enrollment
  • date written
  • name and address of the sponsor(s)
  • relationship of the sponsor(s) to the applicant
  • sponsor’s signature

**Please note that tuition varies depending on the number of credits required by the program.
