Two Students Awarded Florida Structural Engineers Association (FSEA) Scholarship

Rachel Deradoorian, AENR BSAE ’19, and Carlos Morales, PhD candidate in civil engineering, have been awarded a $1,500 Florida Structural Engineers Association (FSEA) Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a junior, senior or grad student with emphasis in structural engineering who has been a Florida resident for the last two years. The recipient must have a minimum GPA 2.5 with a minimum of 3.0 in engineering courses. This scholarship will fund future research activities, such as attending conferences and presenting papers.

A well-rounded student, Deradoorian’s research includes internships at Bedrock Detroit as a construction intern and a separate year as an architectural intern. She also is active in numerous University of Miami (UM) professional chapters and honor societies including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), as well as the College of Engineering and Miami Dade County Public Schools STEM Involvement.

Morales’ background includes research experience with Dr. Antonio Nanni, professor and chair of the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAE), in the Structures and Materials Laboratory (SML). His research interests include structural design, composite construction materials and sustainable infrastructure design. Prior to joining the CAE, he received his masters of architecture degree from the University of Miami School of Architecture, and his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. Since 2016, Morales has worked as an engineer-in-training and has served as an active member of the Professional College of Engineers and Land Surveyors of Puerto Rico.

The students were presented the award by Donata Williams, FSEA South Florida Chapter President, and Dr. Guillermo Claure, FSEA Board Director, who also serves as post-doctoral associate in the UM College of Engineering’s CAE.

The FSEA was formed in 1996 to enhance the profession of structural engineering in the State of Florida. FSEA provides input and leadership on building codes and their enforcement, sponsors technical seminars and roundtable discussions, and organizes informal mixers to facilitate networking between peers. FSEA’s goal is to join together all Florida structural engineers and to address common concerns of the profession.
