Student Receives the El Centro Award

Ja’Shondra Pouncy, BSBME ’17, was recently honored with the El Centro Award from the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies. This award recognizes a dedicated student volunteer at The Center of Excellence for Health Disparities Research: El Centro, who shows extraordinary promise in impacting health disparities. Pouncy started volunteering in El Centro research opportunities in fall 2014, and she has served as a student research assistant in several research projects, in topics ranging from transgender women’s health to family substance abuse and mental health. She also received a scholarship to conduct research on cardiovascular disease in Australian women in Melbourne, Australia, in summer 2016 as a health disparities international research training program scholar.

Pouncy’s mentors describe her as diligent, responsible and efficient. She has done all of this incredible work while balancing a major in biomedical engineering, minors in public health and chemistry, and working at the Butler Center for Service and Leadership.

The College of Engineering would like to congratulate Pouncy, and we look forward to seeing everything that she will accomplish in her future!
