Sung Hee Joo Selected as 2017 ASCE ExCEEd Fellow

Dr. Sung Hee Joo, assistant professor of environmental engineering in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, has been selected as a 2017 ExCEEd (Excellence in Civil Engineering Education) Fellow by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The society’s Committee on Faculty Development selected Joo because of her commitment to excellence in education and a willingness to serve as a future role model for effective teaching at University of Miami College of Engineering.

Joo’s selection as an ExCEEd Fellow allows her to participate in this year’s ASCE ExCEEd Teaching Workshop June 18-23.This workshop is a six-day practicum that provides engineering educators with an opportunity to improve their teaching abilities. The workshop focuses on various teaching skills and includes seminars addressing the following topics:

  • Principles of effective teaching and learning
  • Learning styles
  • Communication skills
  • Learning objectives
  • Class organization and course organization
  • Development of interpersonal rapport with students
  • Teaching with technology
  • Classroom assessment techniques

Through the highly competitive ExCEEd Fellowship, ASCE has successfully organized its teaching workshop for faculty members from across the U.S. and world each summer for the past 14 years.
