Internship Profile: Shuvam Pochi, Mechanical Engineering ’19 (PowerDesign)

Name: Shuvam Pochi
Class: 2019
Hometown: Miami
Degree: Mechanical Engineering
Internship location (Company Name and Location): PowerDesign; St. Petersburg, Fla.
How did you find this internship?
I found this opportunity at the Spring career fair.

Describe your internship.
I was a mechanical engineering design intern doing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems design work mainly on Autodesk Revit. I have worked on real submitted work, completing a full 50% Design Development submission on my own with guidance from my mentor, and participated in coordination meetings for multimillion-dollar projects.

What did you learn at CoE that has helped you at your summer internship?
The actual information I have learned in my classes has carryover (fluids, thermo, heat transfer, etc.), but what really helped me was the way of thinking conducive to problem solving, which I learned by going through the complex problems and calculations given in my classes.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned at this program?
Organization is key. Staying organized helped me get my work done faster and more reliably. It also made working more pleasant, especially when you aren’t rummaging through papers and documents trying to find information.

Why has this been a good experience for you?
This opportunity has really given me a glimpse into the construction industry, MEP engineering specifically. I was able to travel to job sites in Washington D.C., and the other interns also traveled to job sites all over the US. It also helped me narrow down my post-graduate options.
