Internship Profile: Lea Perez, BSIE ’19 (AAR Landing Gear Services)

Name: Lea Perez
Class: 2019
Hometown: Hollywood, Fla.
Concentrations: Industrial Engineering
Internship location: AAR Landing Gear Services in Miami, Fla.

How did you find this internship?
I found the internship through the industrial engineering club on campus.

Describe your internship.
At AAR Landing Gear Services, my job is to work with the planning department to ensure that all parts necessary for a gear are delivered to the assembly team. We are responsible for making sure the gears ship on time so that they can be used for their scheduled flights soon after.

What did you learn at CoE that has helped you at your summer internship?
Since I’ve just finished my sophomore year and have only taken one class in industrial engineering, I don’t have a lot of knowledge in my major that I can take with me to AAR. But even still, I feel like the one class I took in IE—work measurement—has helped me in coming up with ideas for improvement in the company’s shop. We have one particular department that is designated for the small parts that make up the gears and, somehow, they are always behind on their completion dates. I’m working on using work measurement to correlate employee speed and their work environment so that these problems can be averted in the future.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned at this program?
Having this internship has really taught me the responsibility engineers are given in the industry. We are ultimately the people held accountable if something goes wrong and, although it can feel a bit overwhelming, it’s a valuable lesson and a good motivation.

Why has this been a good experience for you?
This internship has taught me the importance of interdepartmental communication and good organization. Our company refurbishes airplane gears, so when a gear enters the shop and is disassembled, each part of the gear is given its own agenda and sent on its way to the corresponding departments. Without using programs that help us locate the parts and communication with the department heads, we would never be able to get a true status on our parts.
