How did you find this internship?
I found this internship by searching on the internet.

Describe your internship.
My internship at Altec Industries, in Creedmoor, N.C., focused on the continuous improvement of the production of numerous models of aerial device trucks. Altec has an adapted lean manufacturing process with emphasis on relentless continuous improvement. With this objective, I worked with a team of ten engineers to constantly enhance Altec trucks as they progress down the manufacturing lines. This includes upgrades to safety procedures, new technologically advanced tools, redesign to increase efficiency and reduction of waste.

What did you learn at CoE that has helped you at your summer internship?
The University of Miami College of Engineering prepared me for this internship in several ways. The most useful concept during my summer at Altec was the design process. The process of stepping back to lay out the constraints and make a useful design for testing and trials was very significant. It’s a mindset that you must be confident and comfortable with utilizing. Another skill that I learned in CoE which was put to the test is my SolidWorks skills.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned at this program?
Throughout the internship, I gave weekly presentations on our Kaizen Rapid Continuous Improvement events. This opportunity allowed me to build communication and public speaking skills. As an engineer, communication skills are priceless. It’s paramount for an engineer to clearly and concisely describe and communicate the design, changes, or procedures to an audience or team. During this internship, I strengthened these skills, making me feel like a more well-rounded engineer and teammate among colleagues.

Why has this been a good experience for you?
This internship has been a useful experience because it taught me to think outside the box, learn to meet objectives while having fun and communicate my ideas in a clear fashion.
