Four Students Honored with Cuban American Association of Civil Engineers and the Association of Cuban-American Engineers Scholarships

The Cuban American Association of Civil Engineers (CAACE) and the Association of Cuban-American Engineers (ACAE) hosted their 56th Annual Engineer’s Day Gala on March 25 at the Hilton Miami Airport Hotel. Four students from the College of Engineering (CoE) received scholarships at the Annual Engineer’s Day Gala:

  • Brigitte Morales is a PhD student in the Department of Mechanical Aerospace Engineering. She graduated with a BS in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has previously interned at Ferrari, Schlumberger, 5 wits Productions and the Institute for Biomedical Research Barcelona. She is a previous recipient of the Cuban American Engineers Scholarship, as well as a National Science Foundation Fellowship recipient. Morales was awarded the Ing. Rodolfo R. Sanchez Scholarship.
  • Marie Jacqueline Pape is a junior studying mechanical engineering and applied physics with a minor in mathematics. She is conducting research on redox flow batteries to improve efficiencies. Pape holds a Six Sigma Green Belt certification and is a professional development chair for the Society of Women Engineers. Her goal is to complete her PhD and become a leading scientific researcher in the field of computational mechanics. She holds a 3.97 GPA. She was awarded the Hewlett Packard Scholarship and Luiano de Goicoechea Scholarship for the highest GPA at UM.
  • Jasmine Perez is a senior studying environmental engineering with a minor in mathematics and a certificate in geospatial technologies. During her time at UM, she has been involved in undergraduate research, worked on a variety of projects with Engineers Without Borders and competed in the Cuba Infrastructure Challenge. Outside of school, she has volunteered with the Army Corps of Engineers, worked on an National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF REU) program in Belize regarding flood mitigation and has been interning for 300 Engineering Group. She received both the Molins Family Scholarship Award and the Ing. Antonio Choy Scholarship.
  • Reyniero Sanchez is a senior studying industrial engineering with minors in Spanish and French. He is a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at UM, as well as the Alpha Pi Mu Industrial Engineering honor society and the Catholic Campus Ministry. In the summer of 2016, Sanchez was invited to participate in the Summer Research Opportunity Program at the University of Michigan. He received the Ing. Pedro O. Martinez Scholarship.

The scholarships given by CAACE and ACAE are in memory of those engineers who contributed to the development of CAACE and ACAE through the years or by the corresponding company sponsors. Students received $500 to $2,000, depending on the scholarship.

Congratulations to Morales, Pape, Perez and Sanchez.
