Dr. Helena Solo-Gabriele, PhD, PE

Professor and Associate Dean for Research Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering

Dr. Helena Solo-Gabriele is the Associate Dean for Research at the College of Engi-neering and also holds an appointment as Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectur-al and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Solo-Gabriele graduated from the University of Miami with a BS and MS in Civil Engineering in 1987 and 1988, respectively. She re-ceived her Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 1995, and joined the University of Miami engineering faculty the same year.

As a professor, she teaches courses in environmental engineering. Her research focus is on evaluating the environmental impacts of contaminants including chemical releases from pressure treated wood and developing new methods for analyzing the microbiological water quality at recreational beaches. Her research projects have included work on hydrology in the Everglades, the environmental impact of CCA-treated wood, and water-borne microbes. She has also led educational curriculum development for atmospheric and marine-based interdisciplinary health based training and has coordinated student design competitions focused on Cuba’s Infrastructure. She currently serves on the Steering Committee of the University of Miami program Scientists and Engineers Expanding Diversity and Success (SEEDS). SEEDS is a UM-wide program that is visibly focused on science and engineering careers and diversity.

Dr. Solo-Gabriele is responsible for managing the research proposal process for the College of Engineering and for administering College-level recognition and awards among the faculty and staff. She is also responsible for administering Graduate Student offers and promoting College-level research initiatives among faculty and students. She also organiz-es the Distinguished Speaker Series, which brings internationally renowned researchers to the University to present their work to students, faculty and alumni.
