Biography

Nelson Salas, PhD is a research assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL. He is also the Director of the Biomedical Optics and Laser Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Salas is also involved in projects within otolaryngology, neurosurgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, and interventional radiology. He received his undergraduate degree (BSES 1997) from the University of Florida and his Masters (MSBE 2001) and Doctorate (PhD,BE 2007) degree from the University of Miami, where he was an NIH fellow working on laser interstitial thermotherapy for breast tumors. His research interests include biomedical optics and photonics, laser-tissue interactions, minimally-invasive image-guided surgical diagnostic and therapeutic modalities and instrumentation.
