Biography

Dr. James Coakley received his B. Eng. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University College Dublin. He earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. After postdoctoral appointments at Imperial College London and at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, he was awarded a three year Marie Curie research fellowship in 2014, co-hosted between Northwestern University and the University of Cambridge. He is a member of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory review committee, by invitation, and has been the invited speaker and session chair at the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) conference.

Research Interests

His interests lie in the research and development of structural materials, with a focus on relating the microstructure evolution that occurs both during alloy processing and during the lifetime of the component to the concomitant change in mechanical properties. He utilizes a broad range of scientific techniques, including alloy processing, electron microscopy, atom probe tomography, in-situ and ex-situ neutron and X-ray diffraction and small angle scattering, materials modeling, and developing data analysis protocols. The projects that he has undertaken have been strongly rooted in industrial and government interests and demands, forming collaborations between industry and academia to achieve a common goal.
