Engineering PhD Graduate Honored with the Outstanding PhD Research Award

Kai Shen, a PhD graduate in the Department of Electrical and Computer, was awarded the Outstanding PhD Research Award during the 2018 Honors Convocation organized by the University of Miami College of Engineering (UMCoE). The award recognizes a doctoral student whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have made a significant impact in his or her discipline.

Shen began his education in Wuhan University, China, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics, and later a Master of Science in Microelectronics. Since then, Shen has been working as a research assistant in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Miami (UM), while also pursuing his PhD.

Shen’s research focuses on optics and optical imaging, an emerging technology with great potential for improving disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. He has published five journal papers, as well as authored and coauthored one book chapter and 12 conference presentations and publications. Shen also was invited to review papers for four scientific journals.

“All of Shen’s publications have excellent quality,” says Michael Wang, a professor in the UMCoE’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. “In particular, his publication on the Biomedical Optics Express – a top optics journal – is very impressive; it is very difficult to publish in this journal. His paper was listed as the number one downloaded paper of that publishing month.”

Shen also has extensive industry experience, interning with Google, ON Semiconductor and Guzman Energy. After graduating, Shen will work at ON Semiconductor as a Senior Engineer, overseeing sensor characterization and image quality.
