Industrial Engineers (IEs) optimally design, build, and maintain production/operational systems for maximum possible effectiveness, efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness. That's why today's highly globalized enterprises are hiring industrial engineers in both Industrial/Manufacturing settings, and Service-related settings such as Airlines, Transportation/ Logistics, Power Utilities, Healthcare Systems, Publishing, Amusement Parks, Space Systems, etc. If you wanted always to be an engineer, and also you are a people-oriented person, then you would want to consider being an Industrial Engineer, because industrial engineers are systems-integrators, interacting with all other types of engineers and non-engineers in diverse enterprises.
Our profession is represented by the not-for-profit, international association called the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), established in 1948 in the USA. IIE says, "IEs are rooted in the sciences of engineering, the analysis of systems, and the management of people." In October 2014, 1514 jobs were listed on IIE's website --for e.g., Industrial Engineer at Tech Data Corporation; IE for Supply Chain at Nordstrom; Director of Industrial Engineering at Books-A-Million; Manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers; Tenure-Track/Tenured Professor (all ranks) at the University of Texas, Austin, etc. The demand for IEs continues to be strong, with the average salaries for IEs among the highest of college graduates. Since IE is the only engineering discipline with a significant preparation in managing people, many IEs have become Presidents, CEOs, CFOs, Managing Directors, and the like in top management. Some of the well-known IEs include Dr. Nancy Currie (Astronaut, NASA), Timothy Cook (Chairman & CEO of Apple Computer Co.), John Z, DeLorean (former GM Executive and Founder of DeLorean Motors), Mike Duke (President & CEO, Wal-Mart Stores USA), Michael Eskew (former CEO, United Parcel Service), Charles Holliday (former Chairman & CEO of DuPont, and former CEO of Bank of America), Linda Hudson (President & CEO of BAE Systems, Inc.), Lee Iacocca (the legendary creator of Ford Mustang and former Chairman, President & CEO of Chrysler Corporation), and Dick Kovacevich (former CEO& Chairman of Wells Fargo).Today, some of our own graduates have been employed in prominent positions such as Chief Financial Officer, and Chief of Planning & Engineering at an international Shipping company; Owner/President/CEO of two major national fast-food franchisees; Chief Operating Officer of a major hospital; Director at a major Space Agency; Assistant Professor of Management; and Chair Professor of IE at national universities, President/CEO of a Miami-based consulting firm, etc.
Our 60-year-old IEN Department at the University of Miami offers high-quality programs leading to Bachelor of Science (B.S.IE) which is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
We also offer a 5-year BS/MS program, leading to both BS(IE) and MS(IE) degrees. This program is open to academically exceptional students who are admitted to the graduate program in their Junior year. Further, students with high academic achievement and professional experience can apply to our pioneering Dual-Degree MBA/MSIE program, jointly offered with the UM School of Business.
Thus, in addition to our accredited B.S. (IE) program, our department offers the following graduate programs leading to the following degrees:

We currently have 219 undergraduate and 67 graduate students in our department. The almost tripled enrollment of undergraduate students since 2008 is indicative of the students' growing interest to be industrial engineers, our department's academic and research environment, and the increasing demand for industrial engineers. Our students come from many countries, thus adding to the rich diversity of our multi-cultural world. They learn to work in teams from the very first year, and become equipped for working in global and transnational environments. They have opportunities to work as interns in local companies. Our students also get to work in multidisciplinary capstone projects, adding to their teamwork skills. Both in the classroom and outside, our students have opportunities to interact with our faculty who are also academic advisors.
Our 11 full-time faculty, two emeritus faculty, and six secondary-appointment faculty are distinguished, through their educational backgrounds, research, teaching, and service to local, national, and/or international communities. All of our faculty are known nationally for their work, with many awards and recognitions, and most of them are known internationally as well for their pioneering work. Their major areas of research include (1) Ergonomics/Human Factors & Biomechanics, Energy Auditing, (2) Management Systems (Engineering Management, Productivity Engineering and Quality Management, and Management of Technology); and (3) Operations Research, Simulation & Supply Chain Management. Our faculty's commitment to research is reflected in their ability to attract funding in their areas of expertise.
Since1999, the IE Department invested heavily in research laboratories, with total funding of $ 2.7 million. Out of this, about $1 million was invested since 2007, to establish the first-ever Virtual Computing Facility of the University of Miami, under Dr. Asfour's leadership, with state-of-the art hardware. This facility supports simultaneously 350 virtual machines. The following Centers of excellence enable us to conduct cutting-edge research and impart that knowledge to our students:
