Ongoing Projects and Applications

Biomedical Engineering students utilize the facility to complete their design projects. The ongoing projects vary to meet the students' needs.  Many students  in the Technical Entrepreneurship course utilize the laboratory to develop innovative biomedical engineering tools and prototypes for their projects.  NCIIA (National Collegiate Innovators and Inventors Alliance) grants subsidize many of the entrepreneurial projects.

Projects listed below are examples of the students' projects partially carried out in the laboratory:

- Laplacian ECG (electrocardiogram) mapping for studying the electrical activity of the heart non-invasively

- Wireless ECG and other biosignal transmission

- Wheelchair control by electromyographic signals

- Portable thermoelectric cooler for bioactive substance storage

- Instrument for breast augmentation surgery

- Artifical knee for the training of orthopedic surgeons in arthroscopic surgery

- Weather protection for a wheelchair user

- Cool drill for opening the cranium

- Instrument to monitor the strength of a quadruplegic's pinch versus time

- Low frequency magnetic field mapper for an enclosed space to assure safety

- EEG analysis to predict epileptic seizures

- Instrument to speed up and simplify dental filling with amalgams

- Personal flotation device for the victims of aircraft and boating accidents
