ECE 203: Electrical Circuits Laboratory

Laboratory work employing the techniques of circuit theory to physical components, devices and circuits. Use of electronic computing techniques to relate analytical and empirical investigations

Prerequisites: EEN 201

Specific outcomes of instruction: The student will be able to:

1. Use the typical equipment used in an electrical or an electronics laboratory.

2. Specify, design and conduct experiments as well as to collect, analyze and interpret data.

Topics

1. Familiarization with equipment.

2. Introduction to measurements/ Voltage division theory.

3. Thevenin, superposition and maximum power transfer theory.

4. Transient analysis of simple RC circuits.

5. Wheatstone and Owen Bridges/Phase measurements.

6. Frequency response of RC circuits: Bode diagrams.

7. A laboratory design experiment: Band-pass filter design.

8. Resonance circuits.

9. Introduction to logic circuits.

10. 555 – Timer.

Student outcomes strongly addressed by the course:

(a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering (3):

Students are required to apply their knowledge of mathematics, engineering, and physics to a variety of electronic circuits.

(b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data (4):

This class is a laboratory and students are required to carry out all items from the list of this outcome.

(c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability (4):

Minimal design content in this laboratory. In a small part of the experiments students are required to design simple circuits.

(d) an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams (3):

All work is being done by groups of two students.

(f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility (3):

Ethical issues associated with electronic design are covered in the class. Safety responsibilities are emphasized.

(g) an ability to communicate effectively (3):

Laboratory reports must be presentable. Students are encouraged to participate in class discussions and present some of their work in front of the class.

(k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice (3):

Students use modern test equipment in the laboratory. PSPICE is used most of the semester to simulate circuits built in the lab.
