SUMMER 2018 CYBERSECURITY WORKSHOP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION

The intense 3-week Introduction to Information Security - Theory and Practice will be held July 30 to August 18.

We are living in an information age, where our day to day lives are dependent on interconnected digital devices. Also with this growth in digital information, the threats of information security attacks have increased manifold. The cyberattacks and cyberwars span beyond borders and act beyond any legal restrictions. Information security education and awareness is a must for every individual irrespective of any particular industry, background or nationality. This course will give an overview of the basic concepts of information security, various types of attacks and protections, and recovery actions. There will also be hands on exercises and projects as part of this course.

This program is targeted at international students who seek a short-term educational experience in the US. Students who satisfactory complete the program will receive a certificate from the College of Engineering – Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Outstanding students will get recommendation letters based on successful performance.

Importantly, the program provides the opportunity for students to visit UM research laboratories and work with the College of Engineering staff. Students may discuss future MS and PhD opportunities with the department and university. Qualified students will get the early admission for the Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Miami.

Our program aims to help international students to learn theoretical knowledge, develop research ideas and skills, and improve their opportunities for successful application to US Graduate Schools. While on campus, students may meet with other faculty and visit ongoing classes and research facilities at UM.

WORKSHOP INFORMATION

The workshop consists of 3 weeks of lectures (in total 8 hours per week), faculty-student laboratory interaction and feedback sessions, discussion workshops, culture explore activities and visiting. Students will have the unique opportunity to participate in:

  • Lectures about Cybersecurity concepts and case studies
  • Lab exercises to provide exposure to various cybersecurity monitoring tools.
  • Programming overview of Python for cybersecurity.
  • Workshop about academic writing and presentation skills.

HOUSING

During the program, student will be housed in the 3-star hotel assigned by the University of Miami. High-speed Internet access is available in each room and the breakfast is included for each student. Students will have access to on-campus dining options and 24/7 on-call staff.

TRANSPORTATION

University of Miami workshop staff will be responsible for picking up students to campus after their arrival at Miami International Airport (MIA) and send them back to the Miami International Airport (MIA) after the program is finished. At orientation, students will be given a 1-month bus pass that gives them unlimited access to all Miami-Dade Metro Transit System buses/trains for the duration of the program. The hotel will provide shuttle to the campus on weekdays.

INSURANCE

During the program, students’ health insurance is covered.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Minimum GPA 3.0
  2. Qualified English communication skills
  3. Major in Engineering, such as Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or other related field.
  4. Junior or senior level standing.
  5. Students who do not meet the requirements will need an interview (contact Ziye Zhu).

SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

As an alternative to the workshop, the ECE department is also offering a summer research opportunity for qualified students in a range of ECE topics. For this case, specific labs within the ECE Department are open for talented students to conduct 6-week (07/16/2018-08/23/2018) research with faculty and current Ph.D. students. Recommendation letter is guaranteed and the strength is based on student academic performance. Outstanding students will get early admission of MS in ECE or Ph.D. in ECE at the UM.
