MASTER’S (MS) AND (BS+MS)

General Information

The Department offers the following Master of Science (M.S.) degree programs:

  1. MSAE – Master of Science in Architectural Engineering
  2. MSCE – Master of Science in Civil Engineering
  3. MSCE – Master of Science in Civil Engineering (Environmental Engineering emphasis)

Graduate students in the M.S. degree program are matched with faculty members who serve as advisors to help each student select courses that fulfill the student’s academic and career goals. The student’s specific set of coursework (known as the “Program of Study”) defines the degree requirements for graduation and must be approved by a supervisory committee selected by the student. For M.S. students, the Program of Study must be approved prior to registration for graduate courses. Each M.S. degree program includes two options: thesis or non-thesis. The typical requirements for each option are summarized below.

 Requirements for the Thesis option

The typical degree requirements are summarized below.

  • An approved Program of Study with a minimum of 30 graduate-level semester credits with an average of “B” or better and no grade below “C”.
  • A total of 6 credits of transfer and/or exchange coursework (not counted towards the B.S. degree, and with grades of B or above) may be taken at another institution to satisfy the requirements for the M.S. degree.
  • An oral examination in defense of the thesis is required.

Additional details regarding the degree requirements can be found in the Program of Study Form.

Requirements for the Non-Thesis option

The typical degree requirements are summarized below.

  • An approved Program of Study with a minimum of 30 graduate-level semester credits with an average of “B” or better and no grade below “C”.
  • A total of 6 credits of transfer and/or exchange coursework (not counted towards the B.S. degree, and with grades of B or above) may be taken at another institution to satisfy the requirements for the M.S. degree

Additional details regarding the degree requirements can be found in the Program of Study Form.

5-year Bachelor’s + Master’s Degree Program (BS+MS)

The Department also offers a 5-year B.S.+M.S. option for qualified undergraduate students enrolled within the CAE Department. This non-thesis option allows undergraduate students to begin their graduate study in their 4th undergraduate year (Senior), thus, allowing students to reduce their course load during their 5th year (Graduate). Students interested in this program should formally apply for admission during their 3rd (Junior) year. The typical degree requirements are summarized below.

  • An approved Program of Study with a minimum of 30 graduate-level semester credits with an average of “B” or better and no grade below “C”.
  • For this combined degree program only, students are allowed to transfer up to 9 credits of graduate coursework (not counted towards the B.S. degree) from a semester spent abroad. The coursework resulting in the 9-credit transfer is to be approved by the student’s M.S. advisor prior to initiating the study abroad program.
  • Thesis research (CAE 810) is not permitted for 5-year BS-MS students.

Additional details regarding the degree requirements can be found in the Program of Study Form.
