BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Derin Ural joined the University of Miami, College of Engineering, Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering as a Professor in Practice, in August 2017. She is the Associate Dean for Student Affairs for the College of Engineering. Dr. Ural is a Professor of Civil Engineering with specialization in Engineering Education, Geotechnical Engineering, Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Management. Derin Ural obtained her Masters and PhD degrees from Princeton University, Department of Civil Engineering & Operations Research. She holds a B.S. degree from the Florida International University, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Ural is the former Provost of the Istanbul Technical University (ITU), in charge of Academic and International Affairs, as well as the division head of the Geotechnical Engineering program. She has also served as the Civil Engineering Department Chair at MEF University, in Istanbul, the first University implementing “flipped” pedagogy in all its courses. Dr. Ural has coordinated a bi-national effort between Turkey and the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency, on Project ACHIEVE – “A Cooperative Hazard Impact-reduction Effort Via Education”. Dr. Ural directed the Center of Excellence for Disaster Management at ITU, and is an expert evaluator for the European Commission on civil engineering and disaster management research and policy issues. Dr. Ural has numerous publications and has earned awards, including the induction to the Women’s Hall of Fame for Disaster Management, and was selected as an Olympic Torch Bearer in the 2012 London Olympics, in recognition for her disaster preparedness community service.
