PhD Admission Overview

The College of Engineering at the University of Miami welcome applications from students who are actively seeking to continue their education and are looking for a challenging environment to expand their knowledge through further study. Admission to PhD degree programs in the College of Engineering (CoE) at the University of Miami (UM) is highly competitive. A qualified applicant needs a strong academic record, as evidenced by outstanding grades in relevant MS engineering coursework (traditionally a cum gpa of 3.5 or higher) and a 302 or higher on the GRE General Test (verbal plus quantitative) and acceptable scores on TOEFL or ILETS exams (English proficiency exams for international students only), as well as stellar letters of recommendation. Most of our applicants have research experiences that have resulted in publication and/or expertise employed in their field of engineering.

Traditionally an MS degree in engineering is required for admission into one of our PhD programs, however direct admission to the PhD is available to students with a BS degree in engineering who have exceptional credentials.
