2016 Annual Engineering Alumni Association Homecoming Breakfast

On November 4, 2016, the College of Engineering Alumni Association and the College of Engineering hosted nearly 250 alumni and guests at the Annual Engineering Alumni Association Homecoming Breakfast. The event raised approximately $10,000.

This year’s event had a special guest, President Julio Frenk, who discussed the University of Miami’s “Roadmap to Our New Century.” The featured speaker was Natalia Martinez-Kalinina, general manager of Cambridge Innovation Center, who spoke about “Roadmap Miami: Emerging as the Region’s Tech Hub.”

The 2016 Alumni of Distinction Award went to Robert Sanchez BSEE ’87, chairman and CEO of Ryder Systems. This award recognizes Robert’s professional achievement in the field of engineering, his exemplary leadership and demonstrated service to the University of Miami, the College of Engineering and the community. He was instrumental in establishing the Ryder System Capstone Project, a program that offers seniors valuable real-world engineering experience. Robert also is a member of the University of Miami President’s Council and the College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Board.

The Inaugural Young Alumnus of Distinction Award recognizes the early career achievements of a talented young alumnus who has completed an undergraduate degree in the last 10 years. The honor went to Omar De Leon, BSCE ’10, BSENE ’10, a construction engineer at ExxonMobil. Prior to joining ExxonMobil, Omar served as the 2011-2012 Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute STEM Graduate Fellow. Currently he serves on UM’s Young Alumni Leadership Council and was a College of Engineering Alumni Association board member. Omar has written several articles, including a popular piece on how to increase the number of Latino engineers.

The Alexander Orr Jr. Excellence in Teaching Award recipient, selected and voted on by alumni, was bestowed upon Dr. Nazrul Shaikh. He has impacted numerous current and previous students through his extraordinary dedication. His research interests include networks and information diffusion, marketing and retail engineering.
